Chapter Six

“Okay, bite down hard on my belt. This will hurt like a bitch,” Lance told him. He looked more serious than Ren ever seen him.

They had found a motel by the roadside a few hours’ ride from Stocoma City. Ren told Lance repeatedly the wound was far from fatal and they should put more distance between them and their pursuers, but his stubborn wolf refused to listen. After paying for their room, Lance returned to carry Ren from the car, piggyback style once again, before gently placing him down on the musty floral comforter.

“Don’t worry, Ren. I’ve done this a couple of times. Normally with shifters, it’s best to take out the bullet immediately and let our supernatural healing do the rest.” Lance explained. He stroked Ren’s hair, holding out the belt.

Ren’s own belt had been used as a tourniquet around his thigh. Ren had had never been this nervous, although it didn’t seem like Lance lied for his benefit. He had a bowl of hot water ready, some towels, a medical kit, and one of the wicked looking hunting knives Ren gave him. The bullet wound on his leg steadily throbbed, but truth be told it didn’t hurt that much.

Don’t be a pussy, Ren. Jesus, being shot at and running away from shifter goons calling for his blood was the reason why Ren avoided dealings with his family in the first place.

“Ren?” Lance asked.

“Okay, I’m ready,” Ren lied. He was far from ready, but he bit down on the leather all the same. Lance sterilized the knife. Ren shut his eyes, unable to look at the grisly sight.

“Be brave, kitty. This will be done so fast, you’ll hardly feel it,” Lance coaxed.

Ren bit down, tasting leather, as the blade dug into his skin. Red-hot pain seared through his leg for a mind numbing few seconds. Ren thought he blacked out, but when he opened his eyes, Lance began bandaging his leg. He could feel his torn muscles re-knitting at a shocking speed.

“What? Wow,” Ren rasped. He accepted the bottle of water Lance offered him.

“Benefit of the mate marks, I think. My arm’s healing at a faster speed than usual, too.” His gaze softened. “You’ve done good. I’m proud of you.”

“You aren’t bad yourself,” Ren said, watching Lance neatly keep the items. “You dug out a lot of bullets?”

“A couple,” Lance admitted. “You’re lucky it wasn’t silver. I don’t think I’ll be able to remain level-headed if it was.”

“The shooter’s the unlucky one then.” Ren couldn’t explain to Lance how he felt touched by his concern. Who didn’t want a dominant male fussing over him? “I’ve hit the jackpot, finding such a overprotective mate.”

Lance looked amused, settling himself beside Ren. Ren cuddled close, burying his face into his warm chest. He sighed when Lance used his good hand to stroke his hair. To Ren’s embarrassment, his stomach grumbled.

“Is my brave little cat hungry?” Lance teased, laughing when Ren glowered at him. “Let me get us some food from the diner nearby.
